Government to set up new agency

By PETER KORUGL
A PROPOSAL is being put together for Government endorsement, which recommends the amalgamation of the three bodies responsible for disaster that in their work, respond to disaster and emergency situations quickly and effectively.
The St John Ambulance, the PNG Fire Service and the National Disaster Centre will amalgamate and form one big body to carry out disaster and emergency work in the country.
The three would come together and form the PNG emergency services to be headquartered in one building and armed with the capacity to determine policies, plans and programmes to respond to disaster situations.
According to a draft policy circulated at the recently concluded 4th disaster management Conference in Lae, the Government was pushing for the merger of the three bodies to have an “elite, disciplined force, committed to serve” the people of PNG.
Education and awareness are key issues and volunteers are recommended by the proposal to be brought in as full members of the service units in the provinces.
The proposal intends to put into place an elite disciplined force committed to serve the people under one body.
“Conversely, outstanding performance by members of the PNGES or by community volunteers will be recognised.
“Any member of the public, who by special courage, competency and thought safeguards the life of another, will be publicly recognised,” it said.
