Inmates take part in coffee project

INMATES at the Mukurumanda jail outside Wabag, Enga province, are embarking on a major coffee planting project as part of their prison rehabilitation programme.
With assistance from the Enga provincial government, the inmates will be planting more than 20,000 coffee seedlings that were delivered to the jail last week.
“The donation by the provincial government was done according to its plans to improve economic base at district levels and give more support in coffee and other cash crop rehabilitation in communities in the province,” jail commanding officer chief Insp John Gene said.
Insp Gene said the jail was determined to fully implement the provincial government’s policy to rehabilitate agricultural programmes, and so far they had received more than K6,000 worth of both coffee and potato seedlings.
He said, when planted, the crops would cover more than 10ha of land mass.
Insp Gene said when he first came to Mukurumanda as a commanding officer, he began with potato projects but diseases destroyed the plants forcing the jail to quit.
He said the jail was now thinking of starting the project again since the provincial government had taken initiatives to fund it.
