Small boats urged to use positioning device

By ELIZABETH VUVU
THERE is a serious need to fit all small boats with emergency positioning indicator radio beacons (EPIRB) to prevent more boat mishaps and more lives getting lost at sea.
Rabaul Shipping managing director Peter Sharp explained that with the installation of EPIRBs on all boats, it would give the position of the boat within 30 seconds in order to enable rescue boats attend to any casualty in a short time, if there was trouble.
“I have been advocating the fitting of all small boats with EPIRBs for the last 10 years and it has fallen on deaf ears,” he said.
Mr Sharp said an EPIRB costs around K500, and questioned what one human life was worth.
He said relatives of people who had lost their lives at sea should sue the relevant authorities and the National Maritime Safety Authority for not making sure all outboard motors today were fitted with this life saving equipment.
