THE newly-appointed police chief for the National Capital District (NCD)
has directed all station commanders to enforce discipline among their
personnel and improve efficiency to reduce crime.
Supt Fred Yakasa said residents in the city paid for police services
through taxes and should not have to live in fear of criminals.
He said he was clear on what needed to be done.
“I am very focused. Communities have openly expressed the need for
effective police service and protection. The level of fear in the
communities has increased and a feeling of insecurity is being felt and
is evident when people take extra precautions and other security
measures,” he said after a handover of command at the Boroko station
yesterday.
Former commander Chief Supt Mark Kanawi, section heads, station
commanders and other officers were present at the brief ceremony.
Supt Yakasa, who served in the NCD for several years, said a lot had to
be done to make the police system more effective in fighting crime in
the city and it also required the support of the community.
He said he had drawn up seven strategies which included improving
professionalism, discipline, prudent administration with IT support and
keeping the city clean.
Supt Yakasa is from Sakarip village in Wabag, Enga, and joined the
police force in 1982 at the age of 17.
After graduating from cadet training as an inspector in 1994, he was
made commander of the Gerehu station.
Prior to this appointment, he was the executive officer to the deputy
commissioner (Administration).
