Rai  Coast shuns failed pollies

By KEVIN PAMBA
A COMMUNITY leader in the Rai Coast district of Madang has called on authorities to stop failed candidates from other electorate in the province to contest in the Rai Coast Open by-election next month.
Chairman of the Magari Inland Pipeline Landowners Association Steven Saud said failed candidates from other electorate should not contest the Rai Coast electorate because it is improper and they do not live in the district.
Mr Saud’s comment is in line with claims that some losing candidates in the 2007 election were planning to contest the by-election.
The Electoral Commission is conducting the by-election after the Supreme Court recently upheld the rape conviction of winning candidate and sitting MP James Yali, who was jailed last year for raping his 17-year-old sister-in-law at the Madang provincial government head office in 2004.
Mr Saud said the by-election should be contested by resident citizens of Rai Coast electorate and not opportunists from other electorate whose motives are questionable.
He said that Rai
Coast deserved good leadership that had been denied the people over the last two terms of Parliament.
A senior public servant from the district also shared the same sentiments.
The public servant, who declined to be named, said the by-election was for the Rai Coast people who live in the electorate and not a lottery for anyone from anywhere to try his or her luck.
