Changing to spring

POM Road Runners will compete in the “Spring Into Summer Series” tomorrow starting with round one at 5pm at the Kila Police Barracks, Gabutu. The undulating 5km course will take the runners to Vabukori village, back past the barracks onto Scratchley Road, Kaugere, and back to the start again.
Points are collected over five rounds, and the runner with the most points will be declared winner. The 1.8km and 10km distances are also on offer.

Finals for basketball

THE Capital Basketball League (CBL) advance into the finals this weekend with Tamaraws and Chariots a must-see match in the men’s A.
Hohola courts will witness CBL’s much-anticipated finals series this Sunday with Tamaraws and Chariots to fight a real battle.
The winner of this match will book the first grand spot, and the match should attract a huge crowd.

Gereka into finals

GEREKA Village near Port Moresby will celebrated their volleyball grand final in style this weekend. In the men’s final, Huki will take on Enemoea while in the women’s, Huki again will do battle with Zulu Crusaders.
Hukia and Enemoea have dominated the top spot throughout the season sharing the top three sports for several weeks.
With the height advantage, Hukie with Willie Hui, Vavine Karo, Raymond Ovenou and former PNG Rep Murray Charlie could not to be outdone. Enemoea have the versatility and mobility that has earned them the grand final spot.
Jeffery Charlie, a doubtful starter with injury will call up the young guns in Toovey, Joku, Mado, Liva and Nates to fire in all positions. Best cover defence will win the game.

Kwikila soccer boost

KWIKILA Urban Soccer Association (KUSA) received a sponsorship package from National Soccer League (NSL) team Gelle Hills recently. The sponsorship was announced during the grand final last week held at Kwikila Station.
The grand final was between Kwikila Kona Bois and Poligolo Mt Brown Brothers which Kona Bois won 1-0 in front of more than 1,000 spectators.

Small leagues support

A former rugby league player and administrator has said the overseas-based rugby league players playing in obscure small leagues in Australia or elsewhere should not be selected for Kumul team. Former Madang Rugby League administrator Max Kitao said only those playing in bigger leagues such as the National Rugby League of Australia, English Super League or Queensland State League.
Kitao said those in big time leagues such as Paul Aiton, John Wilshere, Stanley Gene and Makali Aizue should be selected and not every body else in small competitions. He said more chances should be given to the SP Cup and Zone players.

Tabubil ready to fire

TABUBIL volleyball squad is gearing up for the coming national championships in Port Moresby later this month. The team’s preparations were further boosted by support from a local company, Star Mountain Investment Holdings Limited (SMIHL) this week.
SMIHL came to the aid of the volleyballers with the sponsorship of four uniforms sets at a cost of about K12,000. SMIHL board of directors chairman Lesley Farimiap said it was the company’s corporate objective to promote community and social development.

Helping hand in tennis

MORE than 50 youngsters have raised their hands to participate in a lawn tennis tournament in Port Moresby this weekend. The Airways Age Group Singles for U8, U10, U14 and U16 has attracted a good number of players from schools and the Port Moresby Tennis Club.
But according to tournament organiser and head coach Kwalam Apisah, interest is still high among schools students ad surrounding community and for that reason invitation is still open for anybody who is willing to participate.
Due to commitment to the Pacific Games this year the tournament was deferred from September to this weekend. Airways Hotel is the major sponsor of the tournament providing all equipments and a facelift for the courts.
