Better standard of life in 10 years: PM

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare gave an assurance yesterday that people in the rural areas will enjoy a better standard of life within the next 10 years.
He said the Government would be able to bring this about because the country’s growth was exceeding the population growth.
“We are now in a position to really make a difference in preparation for disasters and other adversities,” he said in a statement to congratulate Finance and Planing Minister Patrick Pruaitch for the Supplementary Budget handed down last week.
“At the same time, we have used this 2007 surplus to build roads, wharves and the Lae port to support the increased economic activities in those areas.
“This Government would continue to ensure that over the 10-year period of office, the living standards of the people of Papua New Guinea would continue to improve.
“We tightened our belts in the first few years from 2002. Today, we are spending money in sensible areas that would bring further growth.”
