Marathon champ a guest of honour
A LARGE number of Port Moresby runners gathered at Kila Police Barracks at Gabutu under a blazing sun for the first round of the “Spring into Summer Series”. POM Road Runners welcomed Sapoli Yao, having just returned from his record breaking run at the international Melbourne Half Marathon.
Milton Iakosi led half a dozen runners past Vabukori as Yao waited to make his move.
Hundreds of curious onlookers were excited as they recognised the international celebrity among the runners.
Yao bided his time as he continued to stalk the leading runners.
As the pressure to perform intensified, the rolling hills and the hot sun took a toll on the leading pack, Yao then made his decisive move.
At the 3km mark, Yao surged past Iakosi who could not respond.
Yao set a new record of 16m 50s for the 5km course in comprehensively defeating Iakosi by an even minute.
Joe Kaikai finally overcame Laurence Chandy in the closing stages of the race to finish in third place.
Amber Cernovs continued her good form to be the leading female and finish tenth of the 24 runners.
Only two runners slogged out the 10km race with Henry Horou easily accounting for Tim Patterson.
In the 1.8km sprint Noko Negosa won in a new record of 6m 34s.
The rest of the field was made up of local juniors who joined in for some fun.
This Saturday POMRR go country ñ at De La Salle College, Bomana, for 3km and 8km events.
