Budget aims to boost construction
industry, says PM
PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare said this supplementary
budget will encourage real growth in the construction industry.
Sir Michael said spending money in improving infrastructure and district
development meant more construction would take place over the next five
years.
“With the amount of money in circulation in our economy at the moment, the
construction industry will continue to grow. It is labour intensive and will
employ many of our people both skilled and unskilled,” he said.
“The Government has already allocated funding to provide more houses for
public servants such as police, nurses and doctors.
“I encourage our people to be enterprising, make the most of the flush in
our economy.”
Districts now have funds available to construct water supplies, health
facilities and supplies, build more classrooms and improve education tools
and housing for teachers and school inspectors.
Sir Michael said it was up to the Joint District Planning Committees to take
responsibility of their districts to ensure that the K4 million provided for
district development in this supplementary budget was well spent in the
priority areas of health, education water supply and law and order.
“The National Development Bank is also there to assist Papua New Guineans in
funding small business ventures, not only in the agriculture sector. Our
builders, electricians and plumbers must organise themselves and take
advantage of these opportunities that are now available,” he said.
