Local communities urged to help police

By ANDREW ALPHONSE
LOCAL communities have been urged to help police if they want to see greater peace and less crime.

Acting Southern Highlands police commander Insp Benson Osil said on Sunday that the people could especially help in identifying law-breakers living among them.
He made the comment following a robbery at the Yombi section of the Highlands Highway between Imbonggu and Mendi last Thursday.
He said the men who robbed a Mendi businessman of K38,500 worth of goods were still at large.
A provincial peace and good order committee mediated and Insp Osil believed that some villagers returned K3,000 worth of goods taken in the robbery.
Insp Osil said that by harbouring criminals, the people were only promoting criminal activities.
Often, he said, the people would try to resolve disputes, including assaults and robbery, by paying compensation.
He said even if compensation was paid, law should be allowed to take its course.
The alleged offenders must be produced in court and tried, he said.
