FARMERS who participated in the World Food Day (WFD) celebrations in Port Moresby have called on the national events council (NEC) to consider hosting similar future events at a location that is easily accessible by the public.
Masi David from the Auga Dilava Farm in Goilala, Central province raised this yesterday during the celebrations at the Sir Hubert Murray stadium.
She said farmers had a lot to offer not just selling their produce but also educating people on growing food crops and taking care of livestock.
She said WFD was an annual event where local farmers had the opportunity to promote their produce and the type of work they do.
This year’s theme was “The Right to Food, Make It Happen”.
Those who came were farmers from Finschhafen, Morobe province, officers from the National Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Authority (NAQIA), the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI), Port Moresby City Mission Women In Agriculture and representatives from Brian Bell company.
NAQIA quarantine officers provided information on diseases that were a threat to agriculture crops including the bird flu, cocoa pod borer (CPB) and the new castle disease (NCD).
A wide array of fruits, vegetables, plants and livestock animals were put on for display and sale.
