‘Gun violence’ getting out of hand: Singirok

FORMER PNGDF chief Major Jerry Singirok, who is also the chairman of the Guns Committee, said “gun violence” is getting out of hand in many PNG societies today.
While stressing this, he called on the Government to seriously look into addressing the issue before it becomes a norm in most societies.
Major Singirok (retired) said there had been a significant rise of “gun violence” in PNG and many women, especially young girls would fall victims to this helpless situation because there were no proper measures in place to protect them.
“The power to control or minimise the problem of gun violence in our communities is vested within our Government.
“They are the ones who can do something to bring it under control,” Major Singirok said at a press conference last Thursday.
He said recent statistics released from the Police Department also suggested that road blocks with guns being used to hold up drivers and passengers had becoming a daily occurrence along major highways and was sure to continue if nothing was done about it.
Major Singirok said the situation had become critical and called on the Government to act quickly on guns report submitted by the Guns Committee in 2005.
There are 244 recommendations in the report set up by the Guns Committee in 2005.
