All monies paid out, says Warner Shand Lawyers
WARNER Shand Lawyers said yesterday that it does not hold any monies due to family members of former InterOil employee who died six months ago.
Responding to a letter published in The National yesterday, the firm said it had disbursed all the monies it received by way of individual cheques.
It said it did not know the author of the letter, one Utu Madu, except that “she or someone has telephoned our Goroka office asking for monies from InterOil but we have no instructions from InterOil on this matter at all and we are not holding any money on her behalf or on behalf of her relatives so far as we can determine at any of our branches”.

Impressed with website
I AM a regular visitor to The National website and I appreciate the timely updates of the daily news. This morning was a pleasant surprise when I logged on to see the changes on the site. I find it is more efficient now and the layout is excellent. I think it is comparable with international and worldwide sites. The PNG flag and map and the national symbol of the Kundu drum as watermark are a source of pride that we can show to the rest of the globe. Congratulations and keep up the good work. – Delly Bagu, Suva

Easier access for news
I WOULD like to congratulate The National for updating its webpage. This new format makes it much easier to access local news. Keep up the good work. – JDP, via email

Need answers on KDC
THIS is the fifth year since Kawa Development Corporation came into existence in the Kabwum valley. The Member for Kabwum Open Bob Dadae must clarify some important issues regarding the company’s operation. They are the status of the company – is it a private or public company; ownership and shareholding issues; the directors of the company; has the company submitted financial reports; is the company accountable to Kabwum district JDP & BPC; and, is the company capable of carrying out construction work on the aging mini-hydro project for Kabwum station. – Taki Boring, Kabwum Station

Wafi settlement welcome
IT is with great relief and excitement to learn that the long awaited Wafi landownership issue would now be settled once and for all as soon as a Special Lands Title Commission (SLTC) is created (The National, Oct 3). Dr Puka Temu, the Wafi people commend you for listening to one of our leaders Martin Tapel and taking the bold move as Minister responsible for Lands and Mining to finally resolve the Wafi landownership issue. We have waited for this to happen for nearly 20 years. – Koivi Yore, Wabag

Timely decision on Ritter
I WOULD like to congratulate the National Disaster Committee in passing three very crucial and timely resolutions in an imminent eruption of the active submarine volcano on Ritter Island between West New Britain and Morobe province. I believe we have learned from the Aitape tsunami. Provinces like Bougainville, New Ireland, New Britain, Morobe, Madang, Oro, Milne Bay and others were lucky they did not get the brunt of the Solomon tsunami last April. I call on the national and provincial governments to support the proposals and set aside funds for both awareness and emergency purposes. There is no time to waste. – JT, via email

Crime on the surge indeed
I REFER to the letter “Crime surge in Madang” (Oct 16) by “Confused”. The situation is very true and frightening. The once peaceful Madang is no longer a safe place to live and work. The problem is not the shortage of manpower but lack of leadership in the police in Madang province. I visited Madang about two years ago and saw some discipline and self-respect amongst the rank and file. The police station and the provincial police headquarters were clean and tidy. However, the same cannot be said when I visited Madang early this year. The new provincial police boss has no self-discipline, lack vision, inexperienced and does not know how to command, lead and control his men. The recent transfer to remove him from Madang is a right decision and the people of Madang can expect some improvement in law and order situation soon. – Madang visitor, via email
