By GABRIEL FITO
EAST Sepik provincial administrator John Alman has urged every Papua New Guineans to ensure that they eat a balanced diet each day.
Mr Alman said only a balanced diet would enable everyone to grow healthy and strong and contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation.
He was speaking during the opening of the World Food Day at the Prince Charles Oval in Wewak on Tuesday.
The World Food Day, which falls on Oct 16 annually, was set by the United Nations since 1979 for all member nations to observe the importance of food in their societies.
Mr Alman said “due to the geographical location of the country, we have a variety of food crops including animals that are suited to certain climatic condition like people in the Sepik River rely mainly on fish as their main source of diet while those from the inland areas mainly grow garden food like taro, yam and bananas”.
He said the people of East Sepik had enough land to farm and raise livestock to complement their existing supply of fish and other wild animals to supplement their diet unlike other countries, where they did not have the land to grow fresh fruits and vegetables.
