Koiari people assured of Govt action on
demands

NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and Kairuku Hiri MP Paru Aihi have assured Koiari landowners they will address their grievances over the use of their water resource at Sirinumu Dam by Eda Ranu and PNG Power.
The two officials asked the landowners at a meeting last week, which was called by the Idutu Koiari Vatabia association of landowners from the Sogeri Plateau, to give them more time to take up their concerns with the National Government.
The meeting was called as a result of the delay in the National Government’s response to the landowners’ grievances concerning the use of their water resource by Eda Ranu, PNG Power Ltd and the Sogeri Local Level Government.
Mr Parkop assured the landowners of his support.
He further urged the Government not to impose on the landowners to have a united or single body before their grievances could be addressed.
“Such demands are unnecessary and unrealistic,” he said.
He urged the Government to take a pro-active approach towards addressing the concerns of the owners of the Sirinumu Dam and surrounding river systems that runs PNG power Ltd generators and supplies water to Eda Ranu.
Mr Parkop said the National Government should accept them as they have organised themselves and start to address their concerns.
He also noted that Port Moresby cannot survive if the Koiari people stop the supply of water and electricity to the city.
Mr Aihi assured the Koiari people he was also concerned about their plight and would work with Mr Parkop to resolve their grievances with the Government.
