Kurumbukari rugby league revival bid makes headway

THE little known Kurumbukari Rugby League Association is making a bid to be affiliated with Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) next month.
Christopher Aizuwe, chief sports coordinator of Ramu Nickel Project in Madang province, announced this to players and rugby followers at Miavie village over the weekend.
“I will be pushing for Kurumbukari rugby league to become a full member of PNGRFL when they sit for the annual general meeting (AGM) in Lae next month,”Aizuwe said.
This announcement followed corporate support from Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited. The giant Chinese company in its community support and outreach programme donated K2,000 worth of sports equipment and trophies to revive the interest in this rugby mad region of Madang province.
Jerico Pan, MMC community affairs director, was on hand to deliver the goods to representatives of the six clubs participating in the Kurumbukari League competition.
MCC, through its community affairs programme, continued to promote and support spiritual and social development in the mine impact area.
This time, more than 1,000 people gathered at Miavi village to witness the presentation and hear more about the future plans of sports and community support programs in the Kurumbukari area.
“With development come changes, both positive and negative. So here, we want to involve our people in spiritual and social aspects of life,”Pastor Samuel, MCC’s coordinator for spiritual development, told the people.
He said that MCC is here to stay and would want to build a solid foundation by engaging all people (resource owners) in the decision making processes
“We have women & youth, spiritual development and sports programme. You have to involve in these programs now and make up your minds as to how you want to live,”Pastor Samuel told the gathering.
Six clubs have affiliated to KRL representing the villages from the mine site and other neighboring areas. The preseason games will start this weekend and continue until January next year.
Highway Spiders from Walium government station and Banu Eels from Usino joined Junior Kingis, Eastman Spiders, Mountain Brothers and Dauna Storms to beef up the Kurumbukari rugby competition.
“If this work out well, we want to have a team in the semi professional SP Cup competition in the future,”Aizuwe said.
