Runners go bush

POM Road Runners tackled one of their rare cross country events at De Las Salle College, Bomana, on Saturday. Race officials surveyed the courses prior to the start and were forced to design new routes for both events so as to avoid the “Unhappy Gardener” who rained down sticks and rocks when earlier in the year, some runners stampeded through his new vegetable garden.
The 7.8km event runners had to pace themselves as a steep hill mid-race confronted them. Runners had no time to rest at the gates of an Eda Ranu pumping station perched on top of the hill with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
Despite stopping twice to catch his breathe on the slow ascent, Lawrence Chandy kept ahead of the chasing pack using his superior 1500m leg speed downhill to ensure yet another victory in a time of 31 mins 9 secs.
James Gurumi charged home in the last 500m, finishing third by a mere second behind a tiring Milton Iakosi. Noko chalked up another victory in the 3km sprint race, his winning time being 11 mins 25 secs.
Next Saturday’s events, POMRR will meet at “The Statues”, Waigani Drive, next to twin-tunnels for Round 2 of the “Spring into Summer Series”. The next major event on the horizon is the “Downtown 10,000”on Sunday, Nov 4t. Runners must complete four laps of POM central business district. Runners will need to pace themselves to cope with the numerous hills throughout the course.
Weekend results:
3km: Noko Negosa 11 mins 25 secs (new course); Henry Horou 13:28; Simon Nutley (MV) 16:37.
