COLUMN I
THE very best of days to one
and all this morning; we hope you’re winning!
***
SOME outstanding Quizzers are included in this morning’s winners
list. Laurel wreath awards in our Lord Cheshire quiz go to the following:
First, may the sun continue to shine upon Devjani Chaudhuri in Canada who
has succumbed to the Quiz bug and is now a regular correspondent. Greetings!
***
CORRECT answers came from our man in forestry in POM, Jason Sigimata,
who is only now warming up after spending some time in kol ples Goroka.
Jason noted that the Governor-General is patron of the Cheshire Home at
Hohola. Cheers, Jason.

BOTSWANA and Ela, an apparently indivisible pair like Bide and Sass
or Rodgers and Hammerstein, correctly e-mailed from Madang; they pointed out
that the Cheshire Homes celebrated their silver anniversary last year. Then
we turn to the Lovaves in Goroka – quite a tribe, one of the many that go to
make up our family of newspaper readers. Good morning to you all!

STEVEN Anda at Pangtel sent in one of his trademark answers with a
twist; this week he notes that Leonard Cheshire was the official observer at
the dropping of the atom bomb on Nagasaki in Japan in 1945, an event that
forever changed the decorated air force hero’s attitude towards war. Thanks
Steven.

ROB and Marj Parer e-mailed from Aitape with a nicely detailed answer
– good morning to both of you. Rob has sent some little known information to
share as follows: “I met Leonard Cheshire and his wife Sue Ryder when they
came to PNG around 1960. They were invited to Aitape by Bishop Ignatius
Doggett OFM to see about opening a Cheshire Home there.”
***
“ONE of the Franciscan priests at Aitape, Fr Urban Reed OFM, DFC &
Bar was a highly decorated Spitfire pilot in the Royal Air Force and knew
Group Capt Cheshire VC. They eventually decided Port Moresby would be more
suitable.” Rob ends: “There cannot be many men who have received their
country’s highest award for wartime bravery, but who are remembered
primarily for humanitarian services.” Thanks to the Parers – and cheers to
all.
