Locals form group to fight crime

LANGEP tribe living around Wabag town in Enga province formed a Langep Peace Committee to combat escalating homebrew and marijuana-related problems in the tribe.
Chairman Noel Sandal told The National last Friday that the committee members comprising of village leaders, youths, churches and women representatives within the tribe.
Mr Sandal said that the group was formed two weeks ago had big impact in the community.
He said that anybody found smoking marijuana or drinking homebrew would be apprehended by the community and brought to the police.
He said that after the committee was formed, they informed the general public through the provincial radio station and also informed the Provincial Police Commander about the community rule.
Mr Sandal said that youths are now quitting smoking marijuana and drinking homebrew unlike in the past.
He said the committee was monitoring youths and people.
Those who are caught drinking homebrew or smoking marijuana, would be apprehended and handed over to the police.
He said that the committee was also keeping a close watch on some public servants in the province buying sugar and yeast for the youths to make homebrew.
Mr Sandal said that if they caught any public servants buying these goods and give it to the youths to produce homebrew, they would be arrested together with those producing the homebrew.
He said that after the awareness was carried out, the community was very quite during the last two weeks.
