Museum money yet to be returned

By ELIZABETH MIAE
THE senior public servant (named) allegedly involved in removing funds from the National Museum and Art Gallery’s account earlier this month has not returned the monies despite formal demands from the current acting director.
He (public servant) was also alleged to have taken all the vehicles belonging to the museum and had not returned them as well.
Saying he had written to him, acting director Vincent Kaupa claimed he called him up personally asking him to return the monies and vehicles but had not responded since then.
When contacted by The National yesterday, Mr Kaupa could not comment on whether they would take action or not.
It was alleged that the senior public servant withdrew K22,000 from the museum’s account following his suspension by the National Executive Council on allegations that arose from the Public Accounts Committee’s inquiry into the NMAG.
PAC uncovered serious irregularities on the management of Natural Cultural Properties and the War Surplus Materials at the NMAG.
A submission on the recommendations and allegations was prepared to the NEC after PAC’s findings on the inquiry.
However, the matter had been pending since then and no action had been taken to prosecute those allegedly involved until the new minister came into office.
