United claim Bulolo
soccer title
By SAMPSON BONAI
BULOLO United won its back-to-back premiership title after defeating arch
rivals Mt Rebols 2-1 in the menís premier division soccer grand final in
Bulolo last Sunday.
The game however was marred by an attack on a games referee by an unruly
section of the spectators who turned up to witness the finals.
Mt Rebols, with an axe to grind after last yearís humiliation, went out to
seek revenge but could not find the combination - haplessly recoiling with a
double headache.
United striker Brian Beube led the assault with the support of strikers
David Philip, Benedict Saun, Sine Beube, Buka Albert and Richard Tundru who
kept Mt Rebols defenders worried all afternoon.
Mt Rebols defenders Niapo Pana, Max Sotnowi, Richard Tongo, Erick Moss and
Sakias Mari defended their goal mouth and repelled many aerial shots to go
into the break scoreless.
United seized their opportunity after 55 minutes when striker Brian Beube
dribbled past two Rebols defenders in front of their goal mouth to slam home
the opener.
Mt Rebols strikers Sebastian Parka, Bangan Tera and midfielders Sixtus Kason,
Freddie Rudolp, Rex Eddie and Belden Kavun were rewarded with a goal a few
minutes later from a good corner kick that landed on the boots of Erick
Moses in front of Unitedís goal mouth and he made no mistake for the
equaliser.
Going into the final quarter, the game was disrupted for 30 minutes when
disgruntled Mt Rebols supporters stormed the field and punched assistant
referee Francis Waninga.
United, unshaken, continued probing for midfielder David Suan to set up
striker Toma Maisan for the finishing touch, leaving team manager Bruno Suan
to gasp.
He was ecstatic. “I want to commend all the players for winning the
back-to-back premiership title as we were undefeated throughout the season
and were confident of winning the title. I want to thank all our supporters
and sponsors for their support this season and dedicate the win to all of
them,” he said.
In other premiership deciders Yombie defeated Mt Rebols 3-1 in the Under 23
menís division and Mix Mates proved too strong for Blue Kumuls to for the
4-1 win in the menís first division.
