Microfinance on radio

By FRANK ASAELI
PNG Microfinance Ltd (PML) has launched a weekly watch radio programme to inform the public on the types of financial services it provides especially to the informal sector.
Launched on FM100 last week at the Holiday Inn in Port Moresby, the concept of the microfinance weekly programme was patterned from BBC radio’s microfinance show.
The weekly programme also will inform the public why PML was incorporated and will update its shareholders on the percentage of shareholdings and on the recent decisions of the board.
The programme format comprises interviews with management and staff of PML here in Port Moresby, Shirley Marjen of corporate affairs said.
A one-hour programme, it is aired every Wednesdays from 7pm to 8pm and pre-recorded at FM100.
“The main aim of the radio show is to increase understanding and awareness on the services provided by PML,” she said.
The programme concept was the first of its kind in PNG.
As of Sept 31, PML has 120,000 depositors with a deposit value of K23 million and a total of K11 million in loan assistance.
She said interviews were conducted with managing director Paul Thornton and senior management staff last week on FM100 about where financial services could be obtained and how customers can access them.
