DWU uses radio to share knowledge
By KEVIN PAMBA
DIVINE Word University (DWU) academics have begun using the National
Broadcasting Corporation’s (NBC) Radio Madang to share their skills and
knowledge with the public.
The academics started speaking on Radio Madang three weeks ago.
The project is an initiative of DWU’s Community Information Centre in
collaboration with Radio Madang.
Radio Madang had agreed that the university could use the normal
programme time slots in various topics in areas such as public health,
education and business and allow the academics at the university to
share their expertise with the public.
Alternately, Radio Madang had suggested the University pay various time
slots to air its programmes outside of the normal programming, which
includes any information that is commercial in nature such as
advertisements for short courses offered through the Faculty of Flexible
Learning or DWU’s business arm, Diwai Pacific Ltd.
Some of the academics who had already gone on air on Radio Madang
include Amanda Watson (Communication Arts), Joseph Lingawa (Faculy of
Flexible Learning), Dr Mark Solon (Dean of the Faculty of Arts) and Dr
Julienne Kaman (Faculty of Flexible Learning).
Ms Watson spoke about an upcoming training on communications skills for
non-government workers as part of Diwai Pacific, Mr Lingawa spoke about
his two new textbooks on local government and governance for primary
schools and Dr Kaman and Dr Solon talked about the educational
programmes they were offering at Nauru.
Radio Madang’s senior programme officer Gilinik Simbir said the
provincial radio station was excited about the university’s desire to
share information and expertise with the public through radio.
Mr Simbir said some of the interviews and talks presented by the DWU
academics could be segmented as feature programmes, news and current
affairs items to be aired on the local radio station or share them with
the national network, Karai Service and even the PNG Sevis of Radio
Australia which shares programmes with the NBC.
