Big landslide buries house with family

By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
A HOUSE was buried in a landslide while the family was inside in Alotau, Milne Bay, last week, provincial disaster officer Eric Balaria said yesterday.

The family home, located near Alotau town, was deluged over by mud and debris while the members were inside.
They were lucky to be extricated unharmed by their neighbours later.
The landslide was caused by heavy rains due to the changing weather patterns.
It had been raining heavily for the last nine months although the rainy season was supposed to take place between November and April.
Mr Balaria said that from sketchy reports, two houses in a settlement also near Alotau had been swept away by heavy floods.
“I have yet to receive situation reports from our officers throughout the districts.
“But no bridges or roads had been washed away yet so far, and there had been no deaths reported.”
Mr Balaria said he would be in a better position by today to provide details as he was away in Port Moresby and returned to the province only last Friday.
