Road links boost rural economy

By FRANK RAI
ACCESSIBLE roads would enhance the rural economic activities to improve the living standards of the rural people.

These were the opening remarks of Buang local level government council president Steven Sep during the council assembly meeting held last Thursday at the council chamber in Buang, Bulolo district, Morobe province.
Mr Sep made the remarks while commending the Bulolo District Road Maintenance Programme (BDRMP), an initiative of Bulolo MP Sam Basil which had already begun on Buwang’s 32 k road.
He said the programme had made an impact on the lives of people living in the Buang LLG within the two weeks when the maintenance work was carried out on the worst sections.
Mr Sep said that the road link was important for the people of Buang to improve their living standard by selling coffee and other market produce.
“This road is the life of the people of Buang and since we have the programme underway, the people will start to engage themselves in economic activities by transporting coffee bags and market produce to the markets to improve their lives,” he said.
He said that other social services including health, women and youth programmes, education and law and order would follow if the roads were maintained.
The Buang road maintenance had already covered 5km starting from the Mumeng intersection within the last two weeks.
Buang LLG manageress Winnie Naken also shared the same sentiments, saying the people were happy with the road improvement.
She said that other feeder roads would also be linked with the main road.
“We are happy with the road project and we would like to thank the Bulolo MP Mr Basil for this initiative to purchase machinery for the project.
“We are also confident that other projects would also fall in line when the road is opened,” Ms Naken told The National.
The BDRMP has two dump trucks, a backhoe and a D5 bulldozer, all purchased from electoral funds made available by Mr Basil.
