Make sure the outcome gets value for the money

THE Government’s commitment to build a new highway, upgrading and rehabilitating the old ones is encouraging. However, I would like to make a few points here which I think the people concerned must take note of.
While the Government may be prepared to pump in millions of kina of public funds into building and upgrading highways, it must also make sure it gets value for the money.
Some parts of the roads and highways maintained are of poor standard that after couple of weeks or months, they start to fall apart.
The Department of Works engineers overlooking these jobs are not doing their job properly.
Some companies also do not even have the credibility or quality to qualify them to bid for the contracts.
Before tenders are called and contracts issued to various companies, more research work should be carried out the companies bidding for public funds by relevant government authorities if they have a credible background.
Otherwise, the Government will waste millions of public funds for poor road services that will not last more than three months.
