‘Public servants must be servants, not masters’

THE Public service need to be reactivated and revised to put trust back in the system, according to the New Ireland governor Sir Julius Chan.
Sir Julius said public servants need to be servants of the people, not their masters.
He added that most public servants were so acquainted to their individual comfort zones that they were unwilling and unprepared to venture out and experience the reality of their decisions and actions as implementors of Government policies.
“I notice some spend a lot of time, smoking, chewing betelnut and gazing into the foreshore vacuum of Nusa Horizon,” Sir Julius said.
He made the remarks during the official opening of the 100-day summit currently held in Kavieng.
Sir Julius said the purpose of the seminar was to put reality into his resolve to attack corruption and reactivate the public service system.
“They (public servants) have no fresh information of the service delivery line from beginning to end.
“They cannot visualise and produce a correct analysis of the success or failure of the service delivery because they are out of touch with reality,” he said.
He called for a cutting edge in leadership and honest spiritual leadership at local level government, church level, the private sector or business or simple street vendor.
“Let us rekindle trust in the society and restore values and justice,” Sir Julius appealed to the public servants.
