Parkop donates K100,000 for PMGH

By JULIA DAIA BORE
NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) governor Powes Parkop this week donated K100,000 to the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH).
Mr Parkop, while handing over the cheque, said his office was happy to make the donation considering that the Port Moresby General Hospital had urgent problem with the disposal of medical wastes from the hospital.
Hospital chairman Sir Brian Bell, while accepting the cheque, thanked Mr Parkop for the contribution which had been absent since both former governors, the late Bill Skate and then Philip Taku’s, reign at the City Hall.
The donation was to assist the hospital in financing the building to house the hospital’s new incinerator purchased recently valued at K500,000, which will replace the almost 50-year-old hospital incinerator used to dispose medical waste.
Mr Parkop also called on the National Government to transfer management functions delegated to the National Government for the urban and rural clinics in the NCD to the National Capital District Commission (NCDC).
He said the transfer would help to avoid negligence in their management, currently faced in the NCD.
He said as a result of this negligence, many rural and sub-urban health clinics were currently closed and people were deprived of much-needed health services.
Mr Parkop said: “I believe that the NCDC should have a role in management of the city clinics.”
He said there should be a sharing of responsibilities of these clinics with the NCDC and the National Government through the transferring process, and allocating funds to the NCDC to manage these sub-urban clinics within the NCD.
