Family treated for landslide injuries
A FAMILY of four were treated for minor injuries at the
Alotau General Hospital after being rescued from a landslide in Milne Bay
province last Friday, Milne Bay provincial disaster and emergency officer
Eric Balaria said yesterday.
“They had already been discharged from the hospital,” he said.
Mr Balaria said the family was in their hillside house in Alotau when a
landslide occurred, burying their house at about 12pm with them inside.
“The landslide was caused by heavy rains due to the changing weather
patterns,” he said.
“It had been raining heavily for the last nine months when the rainy season
was supposed to occur between November and April.”
Mr Balaria also said a house in a settlement near Alotau had been swept away
by heavy flooding.
“I have yet to receive details from disaster officers from the districts
about the flooding situation caused by rains.”
However, he said no bridge or road had been washed out yet and there had
been no deaths reported so far.
