Mother slams CS boss over poor staff housing

By PETER MIVA
A MOTHER has branded senior Correctional Service officers and the ministers as a “bunch of conmen” who have continuously failed to address the deteriorating state of the Buimo prison staff quarters and sewerage systems for the past four years.
“You tell the minister, he is a conman as were all ministers before him,” the angry mother said in a meeting with deputy commissioners Martin Balthasar and Giru Moihau at the prison yesterday.
She was among several families who had gathered to air their grievances following an eviction notice from the Health Department.
She told the two deputies from Port Moresby that the families had brought the matters up with the prison authorities several times but to no avail.
Another woman said she and her husband, who is a senior officer, were so ashamed of their housing conditions that they often refused to invite friends home.
Another said her house had no proper kitchen or stove and that she had been collecting wood to cook.
The backyard where she had been cooking also stank from wastes nearby, she said.
The Health Department has extended the deadline for them to move out to Nov 4.
