Change attitude for a better PNG

I READ our two newspapers daily and from what I can gather, our country is going from bad to worse. Corruption is rampant and the general attitude of our leaders and people stinks.
We can blame no one but ourselves. We will not progress but deteriorate if we do not take drastic measures to fix our attitude and self-respect.
I call on the Government to seriously combat crime and corruption by building up our RPNGC and Defence Force. We should have a Defence Force base in every province.
Equip our police and soldiers properly. Provide them with the necessary logistic support, pay them well and house them properly. Our soldiers and police can combine to enforce law and order.
Papua New Guinea does not face an external threat and people will question why an army build-up is necessary. In the current situation, we are our own worst enemy. We need to protect ourselves from ourselves.
Many of us want to live peacefully, be able to enjoy whatever benefits our own sweat will bring but there are also lazy people going around preying on other people’s hard work, stealing and killing, and raping our young girls, women and mothers.
Our ancestors were hard working people and believed in making a living through hard work. They had self-respect. Tribal warfare was only to defend territory and hunting grounds.
Today’s generation of young able bodied people believe the rest of the world owes them something and are not willing to labour for their needs. I was brought up in a settlement and young people there generally do not believe in work.
They laze around all day, smoke marijuana, listen to music and if they feel hungry or feel like a beer, they just get up and go looking for the next innocent person to terrorise and get what they want.
Most of our so-called leaders also do not believe in serving the people. They want people to respect them rather than try to earn it. They go around saying the catch phrase “Yu save lo mi? Mi memba yah”.
All our problems boil down to our attitude as a people. We have to stop the “I don’t care attitude”.
Our police and soldiers must patrol cities, towns and troubled regions. They must enforce discipline. The Highway patrols must be resurrected. The soldiers can go into villages and flush out illegal guns and weapons.
Capital punishment for crimes like murder and rape should be enforced strictly. Those who abuse power and misuse of public funds must be dealt with severely. There are a lot of corrective measures we can take if we seriously want to survive.
We are aware of our problems and we need a gutsy Government to stand up and say enough is enough and start putting into place drastic measures to correct ourselves.
