Cappo relatives deliver five petitions to
Govt
RELATIVES of senior magistrate Ivo Cappo said yesterday they
have handed five petitions to the Government and others and expect a
“hopeful” outcome tomorrow.
Mr Godfrey Waip, who described himself as the deputy chairman of the
relatives committee, said they hand-delivered the five petitions.
He said one petition addressed to Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare was
received by Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari but The National was unable to
confirm this yesterday.
The petition demands a K5 million compensation from the Government over
Cappo’s death at Ela Beach in Port Moresby on Oct 20, allegedly caused by
some West Papuans and a police constable (see separate story).
Four petitions demanding K2 million each were addressed to the National
Capital District Commission (NCDC), the West Papuan community implicated in
the killing, the UN High Commission for Refugees and the Indonesian
government.
The relatives were claiming that they did not act, in one way or another, to
deal with the West Papuan issue.
All five parties have been given a week to respond.
Meanwhile, the funeral service will be held at 1.30pm at the AOG Church in
Gordons today.
Relatives said Cappo’s remains would not be repatriated to his home province
until they received a response to the five petitions.
