A NINE-year-old was allegedly raped by her adopted father’s brother at Sisiak in Madang town on Sunday.
The Grade 1 student was admitted to the Modilon General Hospital yesterday.
Dr Alex Peawe said the girl suffered internal injury and lost a lot of blood.
He said she would also be tested to determine whether she had been infected with HIV.
“It is a new policy that victims of rape are treated with HIV prophylaxis within 72 hours,” he explained.
Police have detained a suspect.
He is believed to have attacked the girl when she went to fetch water at a creek near the house.
Her mother said she could not believe that her cousin, having lived with them for many years and with children of his own, could do such a thing.
She believed that he had been drinking over the weekend.
