MPs urged to join HIV/AIDS fight
I BELIEVE that if the 109 MPs take the initiative to tackle HIV/AIDS, it
will make a big impact nationwide. While they are doing their best to
deliver basic goods and services to the people, I feel they have completely
neglected the important issue they need to address – combating HIV/AIDS.
Sure, the National Government, NGOs, donor agencies, etc, are combating it
in any way they can. Yet the message failed to reach many communities. So if
the MPs were to take up this challenge, I believe they will be very
effective as they are the leaders their electorate look up to. – Cliff M

Cappo a true grassroots’ man
HAVING read about the murder of Ivo Cappo, I am lost for words. I cannot
believe that he would die in such a manner. I have met him several times and
I found him very down to earth and truly a grassroots’ man. He was one of
the elite Engan leaders living in Port Moresby and his presence will sorely
be missed. I would like to convey my deepest sympathy and condolences to his
wife and children. Although I am not present physically in the time of your
sorrows, my prayers and thoughts are with you and I know that I our Heavenly
Father will give you the strength and the inner peace that you need this
moment. – Pastor Mathew Tapus, Singapore
Thanks, Digicel
BEFORE the entrance of Digicel into PNG, international calls from PNG to
Japan were extremely expensive. My family in PNG had no choice but to
stretch their small budget on many occasions in order to talk to me in
Japan. For K20, the B Mobile call time was a mere five minutes at an
exorbitant rate of K4 a minute. This rate is still applicable and it is one
of the most expensive rates in the world. Now with an alternate choice in
Digicel, the call time to Japan is a good 20 minutes for K20, three times
cheaper than B Mobile. My family can now talk an extra 15 minutes longer for
the same price. Thank you, Digicel. – M-Hito, Tokyo
PX urged to be reasonable
AIR Niugini should come out with a reasonable air fare for both its domestic
and international routes. At the moment, the prices of air tickets are
beyond the reach of most people although it has provided employment
opportunities, economic support and most importantly, its good safety
record. The current airfare is almost triple of what it cost five years ago,
causing hardship for the common people. If only we can have competition in
this sector like the mobile phone, I believe the cost of air fare will come
down. – Ronny Knox Angu, Goroka
Powi no use to SHP anymore
NOW that Anderson Agiru is firmly in charge as the Southern Highlands
governor, the administrator, William Powi, who was appointed by the National
Executive Council in May last year, can return to his former position in
Port Moresby. We have no need for his services any longer. Agiru needs to
work with his own choice of elites who have heart and vision for the people
to successfully accomplish his long-term dreams for the province. –

Basil’s efforts praised
AS a candidate who ran against Sam Basil in this year’s election, I would
like to agree with the writer, Ten One Gipo (“Basil action MP”, Oct 31),
that the Member is doing an exceptional job and we are seeing development in
a short time that we had only dreamed of. I am very proud of what Basil has
done and I feel that at last there is a chance that Wau and Bulolo will move
out of the dark past. – Donna Harvey-Hall, Wau |
