Death of cop under probe

LAE metropolitan commander Chief Supt Nema Mondiai has ordered a full investigation into the mysterious death of a senior police officer in full police uniform outside the Waratahs Club, in the vicinity of Lae’s Morobe Show ground, early Monday morning.
Supt Mondiai identified the policeman as senior Const Paul Mumuan, 49, a widower from Biwat, East Sepik province, who was the acting Omili police station commander.
He said that Const Mumuan was among several duty policemen who were invited by the Morobe Show Society committee for refreshments on Sunday night at the club.
The cause of his death has not yet been established but initial identification by duty policemen revealed some bruises to parts of his body.
Const Mumuan’s body was discovered by colleagues a few metres outside the Waratah’s Club, lying in the middle of the road along Church Street.
He said that Const Mumuan had died between midnight and 3am yesterday after leaving the club earlier than his colleagues, who followed later and found his body.
They took his body to the Angau Memorial General Hospital mortuary at around 4am.
Police are appealing to the public for information, adding all informants’ identity will be held in confidence.
