Onagi is UOG’s new VC

DR Gairo Onagi has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Goroka.
Prior to this, Dr Onagi was the pro vice-chancellor academic.
Two other senior members of the staff were also promoted – Dr James Yoko from Education Faculty as dean to pro vice-chancellor administration and Dr Michael Mel as acting pro vice-chancellor academic.
Acting chancellor Peter Baki, who announced the appointments on Tuesday, said there were 14 applications for the posts of vice-chancellor and pro vice-chancellor, some of them from overseas.
He said the pro vice-chancellor academic position would be advertised later and until a suitable candidate was found, Dr Mel, who had served in various capacities during his 24 years with the university, would assume the responsibilities.
He said Dr Onagi had been with the university for more than 18 years and Dr Yoko more than 15.
He said both were qualified and experienced officers and were capable of reconstructing the programmes and promoting human resource development for the country and the Pacific.
Mr Baki said one of the university’s priorities was to build a 300-bed dormitory and other facilities to meet the growing demand for tertiary education.
