Uni students to conduct awareness

ORO students at the University of Papua New Guinea will go on a Kokoda Track expedition to conduct awareness among the village communities in the province.
Deputy chairperson of Kokoda challenge team Nicole Juene told The National that 15 members of the team already left Port Moresby five days ago and had arrived at Kokoda.
She said the purpose of the expedition was to carry out awareness on political, social, education, cultural, environment and health issues including HIV/AIDS.
“As intellects from the province, we should help our Members of Parliament and other leaders to help develop our province,” Ms Juene said.
She said the students started the project in 2005 and the first expedition started last year during their vacation period, which did not cover most of the province because of funding constraints.
Ms Jeune said the students expected to raise K10,000 for this year’s expedition but only raised K2,000.
She appealed to other Oro people throughout the country, who are willing to assist, to contact her on 3263797 or Dickson Susub on 6966177.
Member for Ijivitari and Vice-Minister for Education David Arore on Monday chipped in K1,000 from his own salary towards the students’ campaign.
Mr Arore made the presentation at UPNG saying that he was a former high school teacher-cum-politician and his priority was education.
He urged the students not to take things for granted and be complacent and let others develop the country.
“For too long we have been complacent, sit back and let others take the lead.
“Now we must all contribute in whatever way possible to develop our province and the country.”
