Financial reports on public funds in districts a concern

By JAMES KILA
FINANCIAL reports on the use of public funds in the districts are usually not made available to the provincial governments.
Eastern Highlands provincial administrator Munare Uyassi said this in Goroka last week during the Highlands Regional Forum organised by the Office of Rural Development.
Mr Uyassi, in addressing the regional workshop, said there should be coordination mechanism put in place to be monitored by both the district and provincial administration regarding the disbursement of funds in the districts.
This is also to avoid duplication in funding and implementing projects in the districts.
It was part of a series of workshop organised by the ORD to spell out the guidelines on the financial accountability and the management of the K4 million being allocated to each district in the country from the recent Supplementary Budget announced by Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch.
Mr Uyassi, in his address, told the ORD, Transport and Finance Department and Ombudsman officials from Port Moresby, who were present, that the district level had been the most neglected area.
He said although there was a lot of talk in Port Moresby on district development and so forth, nothing tangible had happened.
The ORD regional workshop was attended by district administrators and district treasury staff from EHP, Simbu and the southern half of Western Highlands, which included Jimi, North Waghi and Anglimp-South Waghi.
Mr Uyassi’s comments were noted by the officers of the ORD.
