Thugs dig ditch across busy road

HOODLUMS allegedly from Elti and Penambe villages in Mt Hagen dug up a ditch across the busy dirt road to Baisu prison last weekend, making it difficult for vehicles to negotiate.
CS officers from Baisu said they still have to determine the motives of the suspects, mostly youths from the two villages.
But CS officers believed the villagers in the area were frustrated at the deteriorating condition of the 5km-road that stretched from Dei council to the prison camp.
Travel along this portion of the road had become difficult, according to Insp Michael Auirap, Baisu CS service facility management coordinator.
He said all CS vehicles were at the workshop after breaking down from long use of the cratered road.
Insp Auirap said since the road was in the heart of the Mt Hagen, the Government must fix it the soonest.
Johnny Benny from the Keme tribe and a truck driver for a local tea plantation also shared the same sentiments.
He said the road had deteriorated, making it impassable for trucks and other vehicles.
A Tipi Tea plantation company in Baisu was among local businesses that was suffering from the poor state of the road.
Mr Benny said angry local youths vented their frustrations on the road but their action would not improve the situation.
He appealed to the communities, CS and locally-based government agencies to help fix the road instead of waiting for the Government to do it.
