Hailstorm victims in Minj get assistance

HAILSTORM victims in Minj received food supplies from the Western Highlands provincial government last Wednesday.
The provincial government donated 500 bags of 10kg Roots rice and 60 cartons of Diana tuna, worth K20,000, to the 3,000 people affected by hailstorm early this month.
The Evangelical Lutheran church of Papua New Guinea donated K1,500 to the affected villagers.
Acting provincial disaster coordinator Joseph Nop Amban thanked the provincial government for its quick response.
Mr Amban said the money given by the church would be used to open an account for natural disasters in the province to help victims and also proposed the idea of setting up a disaster committee in the seven districts where MPs should contribute money to open accounts for them.
He said natural disasters were likely to happen in the near future because of global warming.
He said they must prepared to help victims when disaster strikes to prevent starvation and sickness.
He also said they would later provide the victims with seedlings so they can make new gardens, adding they should wait patiently as the arrangement might take a while.
The Minj people commended the provincial government for its response and expressed satisfaction at Governor Tom Olga’s visit to them.
