Wanigela win silver at Australian Masters comp

A PORT Moresby touch footy team won silver medal at the 2007 Australian Masters tournament in Adelaide recently.
The Ariku Bay Sharks from Wanigela-Koki was the only PNG team who participated in Oct 5-14 tournament.
This was their second appearance since 1999 when they won bronze.
The 11-member team was placed in the 40-45 years age group made up of 30 teams.
They advanced to the gold play-off but were beaten by NSW Pirates.
Coach Nixo Roa said they will compete in the World Masters tournament in Australia in 2009.

‘Downtown 10,000’ is on
PORT Moresby road runners will meet at Gabaka Street, Gordons, at 5pm tomorrow for the 2.5km and 6km events. Then at 5.30am on Sunday runners will meet at the Deloittes Tower, Douglas Street, for the “Downtown 10,000”.
Participants must complete five laps of Port Moresby central business district. They will need to pace themselves to cope with the numerous hills throughout the course.
The local runners will be trying their best to upset Milton Iakosi while Andrew Tully will be carrying the flag for the expatriates.

Labour Minister helps
LABOUR and Employment Minister Mark Maipakai has supported Team Central financially for their participation at the National PNG Games in Lae. The Minster’s office gave a cheque of K6,000 to assist the team for the Nov 16-24 PNG Games.
The financial assistance is timely as the team management was about to reduce the size of the team. “We are grateful with the money that Minster Maipakai has given, this will help us a lot with our preparations,” deputy provincial administrator Cliff Boutau said.
“We want to promote local players to national events and they can get exposure,” Boutau said. First Secretary to the Minister Peter Eka said that they were privileged to give assistance for a good cause.

Affiang in grand final
NEWCOMERS Affiang proved too strong to defeat minor premiers Pascols 2-1 in the preliminary finals in the men’s premier division to book their first grand final appearance in Wau soccer this Sunday. Pascols will face an uphill battle against Zairas tomorrow to determine who will take on Affiang for the major crown.
In the men’s premier reserve division Kunuma from Biangai forced Pascols out of the race 4-3 to advance to meet 7Homes in the grand final. In the women’s division four-year minor premiers United also shut out Pascols 2-0 to meet arch rivals Zairas in the final show down on Sunday.

Tufi team on show
THIRTY-Four teams have registered to take part in the Tufi Cup soccer tournament which will start tomorrow at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby. Tufi Cup Soccer tournament vice-president Johnsford Bunaga said the theme of this year’s competition is, “Working towards a united, safer & healthier Tufi community”
He said three clubs - Tamarocks, Sibo and Tufi Marlins - have withdrawn from taking part in this year’s competition.
The teams who have completed their registration requirements include Borimana, Robut, Naniu, Kariwab, Rege Unityed, Musa, Yaba, Arimini, Yamewara, Bisana (formerly Ese) and Kabuni. Others yet to register are Yawata, Koviro, Oro Mambu and Daya Stars
Bunanga said outstanding payments must be settled before teams take to the field tomorrow.

Darts final in Tabubil
TABUBIL supremacy in dart will be determined tomorrow at the Gazebo Club when the reigning champion Bad Mix meets their arch rival Jets in the 2007 Tabubil Gazebo Dart Association grand final. After a 26-week competition, the moment of truth is here to see which team possess the reach to be crowned the champion club.
Tabubil Gazebo Dart Association president Skinny Selese said that out of the 18 teams, Bad Mix and Jets had survived the ordeal to arrive this far.
Badmix possess experience players in the likes of Polau Samol, Iksie, Freddie Kapio, and Tonix Tonoodles are set to lead and keep the fire burning from their corner, while veteran Bob Seneka, son and “Danger Man” Duffy Seneka and Joe Misieng will be eyeing for a possible defeat to wrestle the reigns from Badmix repetition of 2006 victory.
Jets are class heavy weights in their own rights and have been missing in the finals lately, however Saturday’s match is very important to them. After eliminating the strong Chauka side last weekend, the temperature is high within the camp and claiming the 2007 premiership is certain on their mind.
