Robbers hold couple captive
By SHEILA LASIBORI
A HUSBAND and wife gold trading team was held captive by a gang of robbers
for two nights and gold and cash worth about K6 million was stolen from
their Waigaini office last weekend.
The expatriate couple is in a state of shock after they were reportedly
kidnapped last Friday morning and held captive for two nights before being
released yesterday morning in Port Moresby.
The Italian man and his Filipina wife (names withheld) were reportedly
abducted at about 6pm last Friday from their apartment.
Police have confirmed that the couple was held for two nights by their
captors but said they could not get statements from the couple because they
are still traumatised by their ordeal.
From what they could put together of the incident, police said the couple
was abducted from their apartment and held by their captors for the first
night last Friday.
At about 6am on Saturday, the captors drove the couple to their Waigani
office where they forced the husband to open the safe where gold bars and
other gold accessories were removed along with a substantial amount of cash,
police said.
Although the captors “got what they wanted” they still held the couple
captive on Saturday night and released them yesterday morning.
Police Commissioner Gari Baki when contacted yesterday said he had been
briefed on the case but could not comment further.
But a police task force is believed to have been mounted to investigate the
case following reports of the couple’s abduction last Friday.
The National understands that police investigations are continuing and that
the couple will be providing statements once they have recovered from the
ordeal.
