Telikom weighs options
RADIO link communication is one of two practical solutions
that Telikom is seriously considering to adopt in response to the constant
sabotaging of its main communication links to the Gerehu Earth station.
The radio link from Boroko to Gerehu is likely to utilise transmission
towers at two existing Telikom facilities.
Like the radio link, the second solution also involves getting the signal up
in the air, out of the reach of cable cutters.
Both solutions provide the means of directly linking the Boroko Exchange to
the satellite facility at Gerehu, jumping over the vulnerable cable runs
that have been cut by criminals over recent weeks, disrupting communications
to regional and international destinations.
An advanced-technology solution, it proposes sending the signal to Gerehu
along a fibre optic element, following a transmission route from Gerehu to
Ela Beach Exchange.
There are two existing circuits linking Ela Beach Exchange with Boroko.
Peter Loko, Telikom’s acting chief executive officer said this would make
the link more secure and offers greater capacity.
“We’ve been working on these advanced-technology solutions for some time and
we are well advanced, including co-operative planning with some partner
enterprises.
“It is not possible to put an exact time frame on the secure fibre optic
co-transmission link, but we are hopeful it can be achieved by early in the
New Year,” Mr Loko said.
