Visitor from Lae City win STC Sevens for first time

THE Steamships annual Rugby Sevens tournament last Friday ended on a good note on with the visiting team from Lae, (STC Lae 1) winning the Managing Director’s Trophy at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby.
This was the first time ever for a Lae team to win the Managing Director’s Trophy defeating first timers STC Momase.
A total of 14 mostly Port Moresby-based teams competed for the Managing Director’s Trophy, General Manager’s Shield and Manager’s Cup in this one-day tournament.
Tournament director Yokin Kipie said: “Since their participation in this tournament, the Lae team have been runner-up twice in the Managing Director’s Trophy division but have not reached this level of the game. This is their first time win and we are pleased with their performance.”
Shipping1 took the General Manager’s Shield after defeating Head Office team with a try margin of five points, while the STC Highlands team defeated the reigning winner of Manager’s Cup last year, Hotels2.
Best and fairest player of the tournament was Peter Opa of STC Lae1. Other best players in finals of the three divisions were Alu Goa of STC Lae1 in the Managing Director’s Trophy, Peter Pelei of Shipping1 in the General Manager’s Shield and Wan Jack of STC Highlands in the Manager’s Cup division.
Highest try scorer of the tournament was Karo Kauna from the TradeWinds team scoring a total of seven tries.
Tournament director Kipie, on behalf of the organisers and other tournament directors, acknowledged the support of the Steamships management, Port Moresby Rugby Union Referees Association, Trukai Industries Limited, St John Ambulance and Protect Security.
He thanked all participating teams and look forward for the bigger and better challenge next year.

Back again to PRL

THE NCD Executives touch footy games will proceed tonight at the PRL grounds. Two games involving CEO’s in four teams will wear the colours of white, navy blue, yellow ad maroon. The uniforms sponsored by Chartered Accounting firm from Kiddies & Associates.
At this stage it is anticipated that all CEO’s who turn up for the fun filled exercise games in touch footy will be accommodated in the existing four ńcolour teams.
However, according to NCD Executives Touch Footy interim president Watrt Kiddie, there is room to include one or two teams starting next Tuesday night. “There is also the special monthly luncheon & guest speaker for the months of November and December,” Kiddie said.
The liquor makers never look back as they led from the start to finish with a 22 points victory over the opponent who just managed 14 points.
Brian Bell after their first loss last weekend bounced back to beat reigning champions, Bank South Pacific by five points, 25-20.
Led by veteran Lucy Emboge, Brian Bell dig deep into their pocket to ensure they win the match.
In the early games, Westpac lost to NTIL 21-16 even though they had PNG netball captain Mona-Lisa Leka in their line-up while in the second game, STC Finance beat Moore 28-12.
In the Division One game, PNGSFOC edged out No. Sup 22-21, LBC proved too strong for GFI 22-16, Daltron disconnected AHC 28-11 and Datec beat Kenmore 21-13.
