Evicted family given chance to buy NHC house

A FAMILY, who was evicted from a house owned by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) two weeks, has been given another opportunity to buy the property.
NHC managing director Paul Asukusa said although he sympathised with the family, the corporation owned the property and had the right to sell it.
He said the house in Boroko was valued at K80,000.
“We will make a new offer to the family as the sitting tenant at a new affordable value taking into account the current valuation and the mortgage paid to date,” he said.
Mr Asukusa explained that the house was placed under a Morgan scheme in the 1980s whereby the tenant could buy the property if she wished to, at a deflated price, by settling the amount within a certain time.
He said that deadline expired on Aug 31, 1996, and the family had failed to settle the amount due.
Mr Asukusa described the Morgan scheme as a fossilised housing scheme that required proper legal review immediately as State properties in prime areas have been “given away” at low prices, resulting in a loss of revenue and depletion of housing stock for public servants.
