Eastpac introduces new road
construction product
By JASON SOM KAUT
EASTPAC Ltd is introducing a new road construction product to the
market, which it believes will solve Lae’s road problems and those of
the country.
The product was officially introduced in Lae yesterday during a seminar
at the Melanesian Hotel after a similar one in Port Moresby during the
Mining and Petroleum Seminar last week.
The product, Probase, has already been purchased by the Lae City
Council, Poliamba Plantation in Kavieng and this week East West
Transport.
Some mining and construction companies in Port Moresby have also
expressed interest.
Probase international consultant and engineer Paul Mah from Singapore
said: “Probase is a proven technology in Malaysia ... it is cheaper and
lasts longer.”
He said the product came in two parts – a stabiliser to ensure a stable
foundation and a sealer that is water resistant.
“Probase lasts seven to eight years without any potholes,” Mr Mah said.
The product is being sold with a one-year maintenance free warranty as a
“show of confidence in Probase” from Eastpac Ltd.
The product’s cost alone is estimated at K112,000 for 1km of road.
In attendance, was Lae Chamber of Commerce president Alan McLay, city
manager Bart Ipambonj, provincial engineers and representatives and
contractors.
He said Probase met the four main requirements of road making – it can
withstand intense heat, has low soil plasticity, has good toughness and
is resistant to water.
Director of Engineering and Technical Services with the Lae City
Authority Kasen Bala, however, was skeptical of the product saying
conditions in Lae were different to Malaysia and the product must be
proven here before being accepted.
He said Probase needed 50% gravel soil to be effective and must meet
standard roads and bridges requirements of the Works Department.
He and others, who attended, had been invited to attend a practical
demonstration on Friday at 9th Street in Lae’s Toptown.
