Japanese Embassy hosts toy exhibition

THE government of Japan through its embassy in Port Moresby is showcasing the country’s workmanship and preservation of its toys in an exhibition opened last weekend.
The Japanese traditional and contemporary toys exhibition, which reflects the past and present life of Japanese children, is currently underway at the University of Papua New Guinea’s Sir Michael Somare Library.
It will end on Nov 14.
The embassy’s first secretary Naohito Izumikawa said the exhibition was actually a travelling exhibition because the exhibits travel through certain selected countries and eventually returned to Japan.
The Japanese Embassy has organised three different types of travelling exhibitions through the Japan Foundation since Mr Izumikawa joined in 2004.
The first was a poster exhibition in 2005 followed by the clay works exhibition in 2006 and the current toys exhibition this year.
Besides these exhibitions, the embassy has also organised other events such as the kite exhibition, hina dolls (for girls) festival, video shows, Japanese language seminars and school visits.
UPNG registrar Jennifer Popat said the exhibition was quite impressive because it featured a lot of traditional toys that were quite unique because they said a lot about the Japanese culture.
