Mothers get cert in reading and writing

FIFTEEN mothers from the Dagenava Literacy School that have been operating quietly at the backyard of a home in Morata settlement became the first women in the community between the ages of 50 to 70 years to graduate with certificates yesterday after two years of learning to read.
The women backed by their husbands, sons and daughters were the highlight of the moving and unique graduation ceremony held at Morata Vocational centre in Port Moresby.
The ceremony was witnessed by members of their community and a handful of guests in the likes of prominent business women Janet Sape, a representative from the education department, church elders and other invited guests.
The event was the first of its kind in the area.
Ms Sape when addressing the graduation said she was in tears when she saw them and expressed her surprise at the age of mothers learning to read.
“I have never seen such a moving ceremony. “When I see these women walking through I was really moved,” she said.
She went on to say there was no limit in learning and whatever they had achieved must be put to good use.
Ms Sape and others who present pledge their support for the women and praised the literary school for the changes they were doing to the womenfolk.
