Gaubin hosp gets facelift

AFTER many years of neglect, the Gaubin Lutheran Hospital has finally undergone some much-needed improvements, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Melanesian Foundation in Madang
The Gaubin hospital board on behalf of the people of Karkar and Bagabag Islands thanked the Melanesian Foundation chairman Sir Peter Barter for the invaluable assistance received by the hospital.
“We (board) really appreciate the work you have done and have been doing in the past as the hospital itself is financially not capable of bringing about this changes,” board chairman Mailong Labong said in a letter to Sir Peter.
He also extended the board’s gratitude to the foundation director Peter Memafu and his electrician David Amat, who were involved in bringing these improvements.
Under the foundation’s project scope and work activities, all work carried out at Gaubin hospital involved the following:
l The purchase and supply of a key-start 5kva generator for emergency use;
l A high pressure Onga water pump to replace the spoiled unit;
l All new electrical wiring to all the special units and all wards with a complete replacement of all light fittings including additional emergency lights;
l Installation of all weatherproof flood lights for hospital entrance and residential areas; and
l Electrical inspection of all solar systems in all units for a possible upgrade at a later date.
Before the foundation became involved, major wards and units within the hospital were using solar-powered lights in all their emergency cases in which many of them occur around midnight or early hours of the morning, hence, the solar-lights would last only for an hour or two depending on the charge of the batteries, Sir Peter said.
Gaubin’s OIC Dr Elisabeth Greiner, however, said this was no longer the case and praised the foundation for its assistance.
Last weekend, the foundation delivered a portable x-ray machine to Gaubin after it was donated by an Australia couple.
