Opposition calls for action

The Opposition has urged the Government to act rather than just talk about curbing violence against women.
Opposition leader Sir Mekere Morauta during debate in Parliament last Friday said with the “legislative armoury” at its disposal, the Government must now act to stop what he said was an increase in violence.
“Violence in its many forms is simply not acceptable. We as leaders must stop talking but take action,” Sir Mekere added.
Parliament last Friday dedicated the whole session to debate the violence against women that was brought before Parliament by Dame Carol Kidu in the last session.
Deputy prime minister Dr Peku Temu recommended a log term policy process that would involve awareness within the education department.
He called on the Education Department to conduct a curriculum review process for inclusion into the system as early as 2009.
He said this should start from elementary schools to University level.
Dr Temu also recommended the re-introduction of the National Youth Service to instill discipline back into young people and for the introduction of family support centres in the 89 districts of the country.
He also urged people to continue talking about violence against women which would make an impact in the long term.
